Tanuki!

February 4, 2010

What are tanuki, you ask? They are Japanese raccoon dogs. Statues of tanuki can be found all over Japan. Typically, they wear big straw hats, carry a bottle of sake and have enormous testicles, often hanging all the way to the ground.

“In the mid-1840s, ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) created a number of woodblock prints showing legendary tanuki (raccoon dogs) using their humorously large scrota in creative ways.”

Like fishing.

This is one of the weirdest things I have ever seen. It would make a great deal more sense to me if this was a modern trend in art because artists are a very strange bunch. However, the fact that these prints are from the 1840’s makes this so bizarre. Huge scrotums!
